Voice and subtitles
Configure narration voices, preview TTS, and style subtitles — plus template exceptions like Social chat.
Voice and subtitles shape how your message lands. Most templates pair AI narration with synced captions. Social chat and some specialty layouts follow different rules.
Voice selection at Create
During Create, you pick a default voice for the project. That voice applies to all scenes unless you override per scene in the editor.
- Browse by language, accent, gender, and style.
- Preview sample audio before committing.
- Voice choice affects pacing — some speakers read faster than others.
Per-scene voice overrides
In the editor Voice panel, change speaker for individual scenes. Useful for interviews, quotes, or character switches in dialogue templates.
- Select the scene in the list.
- Open Voice in the context panel.
- Pick a different voice and click Regenerate narration.
- Preview sync with subtitles before saving.
Tip
Regenerating voice uses processing time and may consume credits on long scenes. Edit script first, then regen once.
When TTS is not used
Social chat templates do not use text-to-speech. Message text appears as chat UI; beats are driven by sound packs. You will not see voice controls for those projects.
No TTS on Social chat
If you need narration over a chat-style video, use Freestyle or Cinematic instead of Social chat.
Minecraft dialogue voices
Minecraft templates map lines to catalog hosts in your selected duo. Voices are tied to host roles in the script and layout panels — swap speaker in script, not a generic voice dropdown.
Subtitles overview
Subtitles display narration text on screen, timed to the voiceover. Toggle them at Create or in project settings; style them in the editor before export.
- Burned-in — captions are embedded in the exported MP4.
- Platform-native — export without burn-in and upload captions separately where supported.
- Vidquel recommends burned-in for TikTok, Reels, and Shorts.
Subtitle styling
Choose font, size, color, outline, and position from subtitle presets. Preview on the canvas — mobile-safe templates keep text in the lower third away from UI chrome.
- High contrast — white text with dark outline for busy backgrounds.
- Brand colors — match hex values from your style guide when available.
- Position — bottom center default; avoid covering faces or product shots.
Line length and readability
Keep subtitle lines short. If a scene has dense script text, split into two lines automatically or edit the script for shorter phrases.
Tip
Watch preview at phone size. Subtitles that look fine on desktop may wrap awkwardly on 9:16.
Edit subtitle text
Subtitle text follows the scene script by default. Edit script to change words; subtitles update on save. Manual subtitle overrides per scene are available in advanced templates.
Sync and timing
Vidquel aligns subtitles to narration automatically. If you change scene duration, sync recalculates. Large script edits after regen require a quick preview pass.
Sync conflicts
Cutting scene duration below narration length is blocked. Shorten the script or regenerate with faster delivery before shrinking duration.
Multilingual projects
Pick a voice language at Create. Subtitles use the same language as the script unless you provide a translated script per scene. Mixed-language videos need manual script control.
Sound packs (Social chat)
Instead of voice, Social chat uses sound packs — notification pings, typing clicks, and send tones. Assign packs per segment from the Sound panel.
- Match tone: professional, casual, meme-style packs available.
- Layer sounds sparingly — too many cues feel chaotic.
- Preview the full segment thread with sound on.
Export considerations
Burned-in subtitles cannot be turned off after export. If you need a clean master plus captioned version, export twice with different subtitle settings.
Accessibility
Captions improve accessibility and silent viewing. Pair clear subtitles with concise narration for the best experience across platforms.
